Facilities
The park provides various amenities to enhance the camping experience, including clean bathhouses, a volleyball court, and a playground. For those interested in water activities, the marina offers convenient boat rentals, although fishing may require a bit more effort without a boat.
Camping Features
Taylorsville Lake State Park is well-regarded for its primitive camping sections, usually spaced out and providing private corners of tranquility. However, selecting the right site is crucial since some spots lack a bit of privacy or essential facilities like picnic tables. Be aware that staffing can be sparse at times, so prepare to seek firewood offsite if unavailable within the park.
Things to Consider
- Be mindful of ongoing maintenance activities which can affect the camping experience.
- The park is more boat-friendly; shore fishing access may require a long walk down steep hills without clear paths.
- Ensure you bring extra supplies like toilet paper and clean up after yourself, especially during the busier seasons when trash collection may lag.
- It's recommended to research or contact the park in advance to verify available facilities and site conditions, as online information may be limited.
Overall Thoughts
Taylorsville Lake State Park offers a mix of beauty and utility, making it an excellent choice for both weekend getaways and extended stays. While there's ample opportunity for enjoyment, being prepared for some of the park’s quirks, such as potential maintenance disturbances or site limitations, will ensure a more pleasant experience.

Not my first time staying here. Always a good experience but this time we arrived at check in 2pm. Had the mower guys cutting from 2 pm till dark. Blowing dry died grass all over our site and tent. Didn’t appreciate the noise all day when trying to enjoy the camping life.

This place is way more boat friendly.. the campground was nice.. clean bathhouse and has a volleyball net and playground. The lake however has terrible fishing access without a boat and the swimming area or spillway is a hike down this very steep hill and then making it back up is worse than it looks. Wish there was better access to those things, other than that it was okay.

Overall this is a nice campground for primitive camping. The majority of the sites are spaced out and private but unfortunately I couldn't find any pictures online of the sites so the one we got was not private. We stayed at site #4 and it is best suited for a group of friends because your neighbors are 10-15 yards away with no trees or anything in between. The biggest issue with site #4 is there is no picnic table. Luckily we were only staying one night so not a big deal but there was no mention of it on the booking website (Reserve America). Aside from that, it is well kept and the bath house was pretty immaculate for such a full weekend. Several playgrounds nearby if you have kids to occupy. The main overall issue is the lack of staffing. I'm not sure if it's the usual or if there is a lack of staff in general but we got in shortly after 7PM and there was no ranger or staff to be found to get firewood. No honor system or anything so we had to venture out to find some after we got our tent up because the main office was closed as well. As a heads up, the Dollar General does not sell wood nor does the new Lakecity Mart gas station. We found a large white house/business of some sort that had an honor system and it was $10 for a massive bundle of wood. Oh and when we left on Sunday, as of about noon, there still wasn't any staff anywhere in the park that we saw. Not sure what was up with that. Some of the hiking trails were well marked and up kept but some others were not so if you aren't good with navigation, choose wisely. Biggest issue we had was with the Gazebo Loop Trail/Pioneer Trail. Several spots were overgrown and not marked so you had to guess a little bit until you ran back into a well worn trail. Didn't do any lake activities but the water looked nice and there was a lot of activity on it. Nice boat ramps as well. Overall a nice stay but choose your site wisely. I took several pictures of each site to help others in the future. I didn't get site 7 or 10 because they were occupied but they are pretty nice as well but 10 is slightly open and not as secluded.

Overall we had the best week of camping and it was our best experience at any Kentucky State Park campground so far. We loved being able to rent boats at the marina and everyone was so friendly! Only complaint is that the bathrooms at the campground need more attention. The womens was out of toilet paper for almost 2 days. And the trash was only emptied once the entire week we were there.

This place is gorgeous! It's about an hour drive from our home in South Lexington. We had a campout there with a troop of one of my Children's. The primitive camping area is clean and very well maintained. Nice s'more area around the campfire! We did not encounter any Critters but we keep a really clean camp area. Shower houses were not spotless but very nice and well maintained in terms of mechanics. Laundry room was clean and well maintained. Fishing off of the boat dock was really nice and convenient.
