Large open meadows. Huge area of thistles and wildflowers busy with bees. I can’t imagine how it will be when thistles go to seed for the goldfinches. Beautiful trails and picnic areas. The park ranger in the nice gift shop was very nice.

Great hiking trails with views of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge, lots of forest walks, never felt crowded. Well maintained state park, rangers are present an visible.

SO MUCH FUN! The office and gift shop are really nice and offer a good break from the hot outside. The North Ridge Trail is really steep but offers wonderful views, and the piedmont overlook trail takes you through a field with cows grazing. We did those two together and it was a nice, but rather difficult, loop!

Enjoyed backpacking. Perfect for beginners as the campground is only 1 mile in. Was not busy in the middle of the week. Would recommend for walking, hiking, and primitive camping! Also had bathroom, non-potable water, and option to check in after hours depending on availability for camping.

Nice state park. $10/car. We brought our dogs and did the 7 mile loop. It took about 3.5 - 4 hours and was just enough elevation to be a good workout. One note, in the beginning there is an area of the trail that goes through a field where cows are loose…and cow dung piles are aplenty. My dog rolled in a big pile and stunk the rest of the way! Crowded in the beginning but thins out eventually. I found pawpaws by the hundreds on the ground when we went last weekend of August. There are lots of vineyards/breweries around the area that close around 5-6pm so plan to hike early and hit one of them up.
