About This Campsite

Pikes Peak

Welcome to Pikes Peak, an iconic mountain that offers breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience. Located amidst stunning natural landscapes, it's a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Known for its challenging yet rewarding ascent, visitors can reach the summit by driving, hiking, or taking the famed Cog train.

Important Considerations:

  • The drive to the summit is renowned for its steep roads and hairpin turns, often close to significant drop-offs without guard rails. Caution is advised, particularly for those uncomfortable with heights. Be sure to follow road safety warnings and plan your drive carefully. If driving seems daunting, the Cog train provides a safe and scenic alternative.
  • At the top, you'll find a snack bar offering delightful treats such as pretzels with delicious cheese and access to a small walk-through museum. The peak also hosts a well-stocked souvenir shop for mementos of your visit.
  • Whether you choose to hike, drive, or ride the train, adequate preparation is crucial. Remember to dress warmly, as conditions at the summit can be much colder and windier than at the base.
  • Visitor facilities like the gift shop and café have specific closing times (the café closes by 6 PM, and the gift shop by 7 PM), so plan your visit accordingly.

Overall Thoughts:

Pikes Peak promises an awe-inspiring experience with options suited to adventurers of all kinds. Whether you savor the panoramic views or explore the summit's amenities, you're guaranteed a memorable visit. Just remember to prepare adequately for the journey, and you'll be rewarded with one of the country's most magnificent vistas.

Views are amazing, but the drive is pure treachery and no body warns you - the only wwarning say use low gear. Early part of the drive is pretty mild, but as you pass the 10,000 ft level, road becomes very steep, hair pin turns, and the road is literally on the edge of 400 foot drop-offs with no guard rails. If your faint of heart, have even a slight issue with heights or any risk of panic, take caution, and remember, as bad as the trek up is, your turning around at the top and driving it back down with your foot firmly but shakily planted on the break for about 18 miles!!! Yes, views are amazing, from the lakes and over looks to the peak! Several places to stop for food and restrooms, and numerous photo opp stops. Plan around park and road closing. It takes about an hour to go up, so don't cut the time too close, they do close the gates. Props to the numerous bicyclers making their way to the top-truly inspirational. Best bet, take the Cog train up and avoid the terror!

For the building at the very top, there is a snack bar that was nice, we got a pretzel, and omg, the cheese was delicious with it. There was a little walk through museum at the top that was really cool. The souvenir shop on the peak was super nice. The cogway station souvenir shop at the base was very nice, and it was mostly the same exact items being sold. Look in the station shop before getting on your train, and when you get to the top, you'll see what's different and can decide where or what you'd like to buy. If you don't do the train and you are a hiker, be prepared!! If you decide to drive, also be prepared! It is a long, steep, dangerous drive. I heard many people talking about it and saw plenty of cars up there. From what I gathered, it sounded like they probably never wanted to drive it again. I will say that the upside to driving is getting to take your time at the top or pull over to the 2 different lakes you pass on the way, really do what you'd like on the drive. You won't feel rushed like you may if taking the train. ANYWAY, the peak is amazing. Just go, either hike, drive, or train. You won't be disappointed by the view at all.

One of the easiest 14ers to visit in the US. Nice road to drive up with great views. July 23rd 2024 views are hindered due to haze from Canadian wildfires, but still a good visit. Prices aren't bad to help maintain and improve such a beautiful place.

It is one of the best times of the year to go to Pikes Peak. The views are amazing. The gift shop closes at 7. The cafe closes at 6. Very friendly staff in both. Gifts are appropriately priced. Only service animals are permitted inside. There are several places to pull to the side of the road and take pictures.

Great experience! We rode the train up. The conductors were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. It was so cold up there. Be prepared, we were but it was still cold, cloudy and windy. The pictures are on the way up and back. Unfortunately so windy and cold to take more pictures. The donuts are amazing. They have a nice gift shop.
