About This Campsite
Welcome to Goat Island
Goat Island is an intriguing and rustic destination, perfect for adventurers looking to explore its natural beauty. Despite its name, don't expect to find goats; instead, the island offers sightings of fascinating wildlife like fiddler crabs and even the occasional Eastern Racer. Being an ideal spot for kayaking, it's a serene location to set up a temporary camp, relax, and enjoy the simplicity of nature.
Important Tips & Considerations
- Access by Water: Many visitors choose to kayak to the island, starting from locations such as the Bert Maxwell boat ramp.
- Trash & Cleanliness: A recurring theme among visitors is the presence of trash. It's advised to follow the "Pack in, Pack out" philosophy and help keep the island clean.
- Footwear: Given the presence of prickly pear cacti, wearing sturdy shoes is highly recommended to avoid stepping on the spikes.
- Wildlife: Although the goats are long gone, keep an eye out for native fauna that add to Goat Island's charm.
Overall Thoughts
Goat Island might not offer the comforts of a maintained campsite, but its raw and natural setting provides a unique outdoor experience. For those looking to paddle out, enjoy a tranquil escape, and perhaps catch a Yellowtail for dinner, this island can be a little gem worth visiting. Remember to respect nature and leave no trace. Happy adventuring!

Really cool island. Took the long way and kayaked from Bert Maxwell boat ramp. Lots of trash brought it from the river. Palmetto branches line the floor of the island. Started to walk across the island and came across what looked like an Eastern Racer.

JSO allowed some teenagers to kill the goats 10-15 years ago. There was a heard of about a dozen. The cactus are prickle pears common in west florida

Such a gem this island is. Trash wasn’t too bad. I’ve seen worse. I remember when this island did indeed have goats. There were close to 50 goats living on this island years ago! Nobody seems to know what happened to them.

It’s a lie! There are no goats! Just a bunch of fiddler crabs and cactus. It was fun watching my husband pick the cactus spikes out of his feet though. Highlight of the day! Pretty funny! Wear shoes and leave the carrots at home!

I always have a good time here! Paddle out at dusk, set up your campsite, open a beer and sit back and catch some dinner. Usually YellowTail. Not much meat but easy to clean and taste great! There is a lot of trash on the island. It's unfortunate, really. Like we say on the Appalachian Trail, "Pack in Pack out" and "Leave No Trace"! Happy trails!
