About This Campsite
Gass Peak Road Camping Area
Gass Peak Road Camping Area is an ideal spot for those looking for a secluded camping experience near the vibrant city of Las Vegas. While this site embraces the raw, untamed beauty of nature, it offers a rustic escape with breathtaking panoramic views both toward the city and into the stars above. The campsite is known for its open, disperse camping style, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the serenity of the desert landscape.
Camping Information:
- No formal amenities: campers must pack in/pack out all supplies, including water and waste.
- Sky views are a significant highlight, making it a perfect destination for stargazing enthusiasts looking to escape the city lights.
- The camping area is accessible, but high clearance vehicles are recommended due to rough and gravel roads.
- Fencing restricts vehicle access to certain areas, but a small parking area is available for 2-3 vehicles.
Tips for Campers:
- Ensure your vehicle is suitable for uneven and rough terrain; a 4x4 is not mandatory but can be helpful.
- Prepare for fluctuating weather conditions such as high winds and consider bringing adequate shelter.
- Be cautious with any fires due to dry conditions; always have enough water to douse fires completely.
- The area can host unregulated OHV activity; remain alert and cautious of your surroundings.
Overall Thoughts:
The Gass Peak Road Camping Area presents a promising adventure for those desiring simple, unsophisticated camping while being close enough to the urban allure of Las Vegas. Its rugged charm and celestial skylines offer an unparalleled experience that is both humbling and awe-inspiring. However, campers should remain vigilant with personal safety due to occasional unmonitored activities and the isolated nature of the location. Embracing the "leave no trace" philosophy is critical to enjoying and preserving this natural landscape.

You can see where there were some spots where vehicles used to camp. It is fenced off now. There is a parking area good for about 2-3 vehicles. You can walk in from there and setup a tent. A group of a couple dozen illegal OHVs came through in the middle of the night. Love the DNWR but it feels a bit lawless now.

Nice area if you're looking to pitch a tent in a relatively secluded area for the night or just as a day trip for a picnic. Definitely need a high clearance vehicle for the gravel roads. This area mostly has views of the highway.

Beautiful view of the city (can't see the strip, unless you take the road all the way to the end.) If you are to take the road to the end, make sure your vehicle can handle it! Our first night was very windy, but not very cold. Great campsite outside of Vegas, with an impressive sunset!

Isolated Dispersed camping. Bring water, wear boots and take it easy on the dogs. Rocks are sharp in the hills.

Very nice camp if you like 0 service (open) camping. There is no water no bathrooms (pack it in/out). Be careful with fire and bring a lot of water. Sky views toward Vegas are breathtaking. Sky views away from Vegas are dark enough to see a lot of stars, the IIS, and other low earth orbit objects. Rough road to get there 4x4 not required if only going to gass Peak camp.
