The upper campground is much more forested and cozy than the lower. The sites are different within the campground so choose carefully if you can. There was a large central bathroom with many stalls but only 1 shower (for each gender) so you had to keep coming back to see if the shower was empty. There is a button to push to allow the shower to run for 3 minutes but it’s free and no coins needed. The water got nice and hot, could be spotty if the men’s shower was also used or if someone flushed. Beautiful location with walking and biking trails.

LOVE this campground- we d go every year, feels far from anywhere, the campground is so close to the water, there’s even a cafe that has food, ice, snacks & ice cream! We usually stay in lower camp, but this year tried upper- the views!!!! We almost always see deer here. Bummer about the burn ban…. The new “normal” here I guess…

Forested campground with beautiful views from the bluff of Indian Island and Port Townsend. There is even beach access below. Some sites have views, some with endless trees, some with excellent privacy, and then others are really small, some even have a fence dividing the sites. Nice bathroom with a shower.

Our third time staying at this campground and park. Almost all of the upper campground is nicely shaded except for a few of the really small tent-only sites near the cliff edge overlooking the water. This time we stayed at Site 19. (Sites 42 and 43 (pull-thru) are nice if you have two parties close together; we have also stayed at 33 which is smaller and less private). Only one other site visible from 19, so nice and private but still have plenty of room for our 24' trailer with 20' long Toyota Tundra, and for the boys to run around. (A little difficult to park due to the angle and the narrow campground road but manageable). The two walk-in sites on the east end of the campground are small, but easy to get to via the wide and flat service road turned trail and just a few hundred feet from parking area. The entire upper campground is close enough to walk or bike to the beach by lower campground and an easy drive to most of the military gun batteries and other items of historical interest (Battery #12 is the only one with guns still in place). Also an easy hike from campground to Battery Henry and some anti-aircraft sites. We went mid-week in August, 2022, and it was not too crowded. The park is great for kite-flying, beachcombing, and exploring. Don't forget to bring flashlights when exploring the batteries and binoculars for viewing across the Puget Sound. The Museum (open 11-4) is well worth exploring; it includes a free kids' scavenger hunt and some older videos that explain the history and houses lots of cool artifacts. Tours are offered on some weekends, but we have never done them because we always come up mid-week when it's less crowded. The dump station for trailers is easy to get to and use. Most of the trails are fairly flat except for sections leading down to the beaches (but you can drive to both beaches). The beaches are a mix of sandy aeas and rocky areas with some driftwood. The cafe near the Lower Campground is great for burgers, ice cream, and snacks. It also sells firewood, but we had to buy ours just outside of the park as they were out of wood when we arrived and did not restock until the following day. The wood we purchased was $10 each for two huge bundles (Aug, 2022). We will definitely visit again.
