About This Campsite

Buffalo Creek Campground

Nestled among towering pine trees, Buffalo Creek Campground offers a rustic escape for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. While the campground's exact address and city title are unspecified, it's known for its proximity to the Colorado Trail and an array of hiking and mountain biking opportunities. This makes it a favored spot for outdoor aficionados.

Features & Amenities

  • Vault toilets
  • Picnic tables
  • Fire rings
  • Dumpsters
  • No water or dumping facilities

Camping Tips

The campground operates on a first-come, first-serve basis starting mid-May, with reservations beginning late May. The weekends can get quite busy, so it's wise to book in advance via recreation.gov if visiting during these times. Although the peaceful creek is only a short walk away, visitors should be cautious, as access roads can be challenging and some campground sections are nestled on uneven or washed-out terrain, notably sites #24 and #25. Additionally, campers should be prepared with enough water and food, given that the closest services are a considerable drive away over rough roads.

User Considerations

While past visitors have praised the campground for its scenic beauty and the helpfulness of the camp host, it can get lively or noisy, particularly during weekends. Recent improvements in management are evident, with hosts enforcing quiet hours more effectively. However, campers may want to bring earplugs if they are sensitive to noise at night.

Overall Thoughts

Buffalo Creek Campground is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in rugged wilderness and active exploration. While it may have certain downsides, such as busy weekends and uneven sites, the scenic beauty and array of trails offer rich rewards for campers willing to embrace its rustic charm. Remember to plan ahead, especially if visiting during peak times, to secure a peaceful and rejuvenating outdoor experience.

Great little campground in the pine trees. There are vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and dumpsters. No water or dumping facilities. This area gets busy on the weekends. It's best to reserve sites on recreation.gov if you plan on coming on a weekend. The campground opens as first come, first serve around mid-May and then for reservations in late May. I'm not sure of the closing dates. Close to a creek across the road. There are tons of hiking and mountain biking trails nearby. This campground is very popular for mountain bikers. The Colorado Trail is not far to the east on Forest Service Road 550.

Great place to camp! The sites are nice, not all of them perfectly level, but nicely spaced out. The campground host was amazing and when we had trouble with our RV starting, he pulled out all the stops to get us back on the road. We enjoyed our stay very much and will be back.

Super busy location. Purchase a spot at your own risk. There weren’t photos of our site posted online, and it was advertised to be able to fit a RV. Well, first of all the the dirt road leading up to it was washed out and in terrible shape for a good 5-7 miles. The road at/around the campsite was one of the worst I’ve seen, and also washed out. Secondly, spot #24/25 - I would avoid, They’re on a sharp curve and both heavily washed out. We didn’t attempt at night and drove all the way back home. All of the campsites seemed crammed in right on top of each other with little privacy between spots, and it’s pretty loud- someone had their bass going from 1am-3am. The campsite hosts ghosted us when we tried to knock on the door to see if we could switch spots. Not sure I’d come back, there’s too many other better sites out there!

Editing my review in 2024 because our plans fell through and we did end up staying here again - the new camp host does a fantastic job of enforcing the rules! He was super friendly and was making sure to pass out a card with the quiet hour rules to everyone upon arrival. It was still a rowdier campground than I would like to stay in but it did quiet down around 10PM. We originally were trying to stay in the Green Mountain Campground which was closed so we ended up here. It was the loudest campground I've stayed at. Super disrespectful large group where a woman was screaming until 3 am. Overall tons of loud groups. There didn't appear to be a camp host enforcing the quiet hours rules at all. Plus the site we stayed at was not level for our tent and we ended up sliding down on our pads the entire night. I would not stay here again.

Gets pretty busy during the weekends. Inner loop are the fist come first serve site with about 5 that can accommodate trailers or rvs. Camp host was a bit to inquisitive and pushy. Reminded you every 30-45 mins when he drove by that he sells firewood and bottled water at the host site. Creek isnonly a short walk away and nice to cool off in on a hot day. On the weekends people drive a rad too fast trykng to get or find a site so pay more attentiin to your kids when they are riding their bikes.Site 38 was the best site with enough space for our trailer and parking. Close enough to the vaulted toilets and dumpster but far enough away that you dont smell anything. Limited services and goods about a thirty 30 min drive away on rough dirt roads so pack enough water and food.
